East Midlands Deanery extends adoption of LapAR

Inovus Medical – the global healthcare simulation company – today announced further regional adoption of LapAR across the East Midlands Deanery. The very latest in high fidelity surgical simulation will have an increased presence in the General Surgery training programmes across the region.

Following a successful initial roll out of the LapAR at the Royal Derby Hospital’s Medical Education centre in late 2021, the region has added further hub systems to three more of its hospital sites. The hub systems offer increased day to day training capacity for trainees as well as a highly realistic platform for pre-operative warm up. The hub systems also increase the capacity for trainees to access the medical models for their take home LapAR simulators, allowing them to train with natural haptics away from the hospital setting.

“The further adoption of LapAR will make the time in between cases so much more productive. Our trainees can practice their laparoscopic skills including bowel anastomoses with trainers nearby to offer help and advice” commented Dr Katherine Smith, Training Program Director for Core Surgery East Midlands North.

Most of the training and curriculum will continue to be delivered remotely with each Surgical trainee utilising a take home LapAR simulator. The trainees have been working towards competency in the LapPass curriculum, which is integrated with LapAR, since the initial roll out, with many nearing competences already. Increased capacity across the region with this further adoption will help accelerate these competencies further. Early data from the training programme has been encouraging, suggesting the LapAR promotes a significant reduction in time to operate as well as improved instrument handling and efficiency.
