Totum - The Digital Surgery Platform
Totum is a Digital Surgery Platform developed by Inovus Medical to support connected, data-driven surgical training across the UK and the United States. Accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Totum is used internationally by healthcare systems, surgical societies, and academic training programmes.
11,000 plus active users worldwide rely on Totum to support modern surgical education.
Supporting Surgical Training in the UK and USA
- UK: Used across the NHS and in collaboration with ALSGBI, supporting basic and advanced surgical training programmes
- USA: Adopted within society-led curricula and fellowship pathways in general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and specialty training
Key Platform Capabilities
- Surgical procedure recording and structured review
- Remote certification and credentialing
- Objective surgical performance metrics via instrument-tracking algorithms
- Longitudinal skills tracking across training pathways
Totum integrates mobile, native, and web-based applications to deliver consistent assessment and performance insight across training environments.
Interoperable and Scalable by Design
Built on an open API and SDK framework, Totum is a scalable, modular platform designed to integrate with existing surgical training infrastructure. It is deployed across Inovus Medical’s high-fidelity simulators, including LapAR and HystAR, and supports multi-device interoperability.
“Totum has been developed to support the way surgical training is increasingly delivered, across institutions, specialties, and healthcare systems. Our aim is to provide a digital infrastructure that supports objective assessment and scalable credentialling throughout a surgeon’s training pathway.”

Positively impacting 48 million women across North America
The EMIGS Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy Training Programmes utilise standardised simulation-based education to support progressive skills development, objective assessment, and consistency of training across institutions.
Through the integration of Totum, both programmes provide a structured framework aligned with EMIGS competency-based educational principles.
Supporting standardised simulation-based education in laparoscopic and hysteroscopy skills across 250 US sites
Totum is being implemented as part of Inovus Medical’s partnership with Hologic and the AAGL EMIGS programme, with deployment across 250 training sites in the United States.
Within this collaboration, Totum supports simulation-based education in laparoscopic and hysteroscopy techniques, providing a structured environment for deliberate practice, objective performance assessment, and progressive skills development.
The platform is designed to support standardisation of training delivery and alignment with EMIGS educational frameworks, helping to ensure consistency in skills acquisition across training centres.
The EMIGS laparoscopic training programme

The EMIGS Laparoscopic training programme is a structured, simulation-based education pathway designed to support the acquisition of fundamental laparoscopic skills required for gynaecological surgery.
The programme emphasises core technical competencies that underpin safe laparoscopic practice, including camera control, hand–eye coordination, depth perception, bimanual dexterity, and efficient instrument handling.
Totum is incorporated within the programme as a standardised simulation platform to support deliberate practice and objective skills assessment. Trainees complete defined laparoscopic tasks within a controlled, low-risk environment, enabling consistent exposure to core skills across training sites. Objective performance metrics are used to support formative feedback and progressive skills development in alignment with EMIGS principles of competency-based education. The programme is intended to complement didactic learning and supervised clinical experience.
On completion of the EMIGS Laparoscopy Training Programme, trainees should be able to:
- Demonstrate effective laparoscopic camera navigation and visual orientation
- Perform basic laparoscopic tasks requiring hand–eye coordination and depth perception
- Exhibit appropriate bimanual instrument control and tissue manipulation skills
- Apply principles of efficiency, accuracy, and economy of motion during simulated tasks
- Demonstrate readiness to progress to supervised clinical laparoscopic training
The EMIGS Hysteroscopy Training Programme

The EMIGS Hysteroscopy Training Programme provides a simulation-based framework for the development of essential hysteroscopic skills required for diagnostic and operative procedures. The programme focuses on scope handling, visual orientation, uterine cavity assessment, and coordinated instrument use, supporting the safe introduction of hysteroscopy skills prior to clinical practice.
Within the programme, Totum is used to deliver standardised hysteroscopy simulation tasks that allow trainees to practise core techniques through repetition and structured feedback. The use of objective task-based metrics supports skills progression and consistency of training delivery across participating institutions. The programme aligns with EMIGS educational frameworks and supports a graduated approach to hysteroscopy skills acquisition.
On completion of the EMIGS Hysteroscopy Training Programme, trainees should be able to:
- Demonstrate safe and controlled hysteroscope navigation
- Maintain appropriate visual orientation within the uterine cavity
- Systematically assess uterine cavity anatomy using simulation-based scenarios
- Coordinate hysteroscopic instruments effectively within a simulated environment
- Demonstrate technical preparedness for supervised clinical hysteroscopy training

CPD & CME-Aligned Digital Surgery Training with Totum
Inovus Medical learning content is available on the Totum Digital Surgery platform, enabling healthcare professionals to engage in structured, trackable digital surgery education that can support Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, where applicable.
Through Totum, learners can access skills-based surgical training, procedural education, and guided learning pathways designed to support safe, effective, and measurable professional development.
This integration allows clinicians to:
- Engage with simulation-informed surgical education anytime, anywhere
- Participate in structured learning activities aligned to recognised CPD principles
- Track learning progress, engagement, and completion within a single digital platform
- Support personal learning portfolios and appraisal documentation
Key Benefits
- Digital surgery CPD & CME support
- Online surgical education with structured modules
- Simulation-based learning informed by real-world clinical practice
- Progress tracking and learning records via Totum
- Flexible access to professional development for surgeons, trainees, and healthcare professionals
CPD/CME recognition is dependent on regional accrediting bodies and institutional requirements. Learners are responsible for confirming eligibility and documentation requirements in their local jurisdiction.
